Matthew Chapter 3 introduces John the Baptist, who is preaching in the wilderness and telling people to repent because the kingdom of God is near. He baptizes people in the Jordan River as a sign of their repentance. John also tells them that someone greater than him is coming. Then, Jesus comes to John to be baptized, and when He does, the heavens open, and God’s voice says, “This is my Son, whom I love.”
John the Baptist appears in the wilderness, calling people to repent and turn back to God because the kingdom of heaven is near. His message prepares the way for Jesus.
Many people from Jerusalem and Judea come to John to be baptized in the Jordan River as a sign of their repentance and desire to be cleansed from their sins.
When religious leaders like the Pharisees and Sadducees come to see John, he warns them not to rely on their heritage alone. He tells them to produce good fruit that shows true repentance.
John tells the people that while he baptizes with water, the one coming after him (Jesus) will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire, and He will be far greater than John.
Jesus comes to John to be baptized in the Jordan River. As Jesus comes up from the water, the heavens open, and God’s voice declares, “This is my Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased.”
